I have enrolled in a nursing course where my instructor will be taking nine of my classmates and I on a journey to the Appalachian area to learn about rural healthcare issues such as health disparities and lack of access to care. Included in this course is a 2-day wilderness first aid course, learning experiences at museums and outdoor theatres, service learning opportunities at a soup kitchen in one of the highest poverty areas, and an opportunity to learn about a new culture and difference in how healthcare is provided.
Every day during this 10-day journey (and a few different days prior to leaving), I will be posting a reflective journal talking about my experience and cover different topics that will help me make connections with nursing course material and research. My hope is that after I return home, I will be motivated enough to continue my blog and share more experiences as a nursing student, anticipating that it could help other nursing students looking for a little more guidance.
I am incredibly excited for every part of this trip, and I am also looking forward to sharing this adventure with anyone reading. I will make another post next week to go a little bit more into detail on some things, as well as discuss my personal learning objectives for the travel course, so stay tuned!
